Re: boxwood

I am new to the list but have been following this string on the boxwood in
woodland settings. I have used them in a setting on the West side of my
house. It is narrow space with stairs to the basement parallel to the house,
about five feet of planting space, then a brick walk. Beyond that are several
Oaks and understory that provide pretty dense shade.

I used a row of "green velvet" box next to the stairs, unpruned for a natural
look, and some Hosta elegans in front of them. The boxwood have performed
well and look great. Green velvet maintains a nice compact shape that is good
for such a tight area. The hostas have not progressed as well, although I
think the dog has something to do with that. Anyhow they are a good contrast.
