Diane, Pete and all,

If this Cornus (racemosa) does well then a really dramatic small tree/large
shrub, Cornus alternifolia 'Variegata' will do well too.  Some people don't
like variegated plants but that's not my case!  This plant 'lights' up a
shady area with its variegation looking like shadows from the taller trees.
C. alternifolia is native in the southern half of Minnesota (but not sure
about where you live) and is marketed by the name 'Pagoda Dogwood'.  It *is*
a great plant.
