John Grimshaw, the author of "The Gardener's Atlas" is coming to Victoria next week to speak at our Western Winter Study Weekend. His next book, coming out in the fall, is on snowdrops. He will be selling them at a prepublication price. I will copy his description of the book below. His current job is developing new plants for a seed company in Holland, so after he leaves Victoria, he will visit Heronswood Nursery to see the unusual plants they are growing from Dan Hinkley's seed-collecting trips.

Griffin Press has just started a pre-publication offer on 'Snowdrops',
the up-coming monograph of cultivated Galanthus by Matt Bishop, Aaron
Davis and John Grimshaw. It will be a lavishly illustrated hardback book
containing descriptions of nearly 500 named cultivars, plus chapters on
cultivation, propagation, systematics and the history of galanthophilia
and galanthophiles. It will cover the wild species as well, and includes
details of two as yet unpublished new wild taxa. The descriptions of
cultivars have been prepared over five years, using standard recording
sheets to ensure that the details recorded are absolutely accurate for
each cultivar. A simple key structure is used to pull the cultivars
apart into easily recognised groups, from which individual clones can be
identified - the first time that this has been possible. It will truly
be the essential reference work to the genus in cultivation,
complementing Aaron Davis' 'The Genus Galanthus'. A preview of some of
the stunning pictures can be seen in the January issue of 'The Garden'
and for German readers, 'Garten Praxis'.
Publication of this limited edition will be in November 2001 and as
demand is expected to be heavy it is advisable that you reserve your
copy now. Leaflets giving details of the book, including an order form,
are available; please e-mail Snowdropbook@aol.com with your mailing
address if you would like to be sent one. The special pre-publication
price is 37.50 POUNDS, plus postage and packing. After 31st May the
price will be 45 pounds. Payment in pounds sterling is preferred, but
for those who wish to pay in US dollars the offer price (including
postage) is $65 - as cash only please, since the exchange fee and bank
charges on small sums are disproportionately expensive.
