[SHADEGARDENS] R. 'Gruss an Aachen'

Jennifer, who lives in northern LA, would like a rose that thrives in the
shade. Rika suggested:

This may be a good time to point out that some nurseries use a lot of
euphemisms in their catalogs, so that you need to read with caution.
"Vigorous" means "an invasive weed," for example. In this case (I
recognize the claim as coming from the Wayside Gardens catalog),
"happy in the shade" is an overstatement. As you can tell from the name,
'Gruss' is a German rose. This rose comes from the northern latitudes and
what they are really saying in this catalog description is, it cannot take
hot, muggy summers. At the same time, it needs fairly mild winters.

I have managed to keep 'Gruss' alive in my garden for a number of years
but it is not a happy camper in south-central Indiana. I doubt if
Louisiana would suit it any better.
