[SHADEGARDENS] Editing Messages

Good Evening, Robins,

The "powers that be" at St.Johns have asked list owners to instruct robins
in the art of editing our replies to previously posted material. This is
to keep archived posts from becoming a series of repeated material.

Dr. Bob Zenhausern writes:
" One of the major problems on your lists will be individuals who use
excessive quoting, eg, quoting a 100 line message and adding, "I agree".
Even if you want to make a substantial statement about a previous message
the quotes should be edited for 3 reasons.
1) It is wasteful of disk space as the same lines are stored in the
archives muliple times;
2) It makes the reply more difficult to find and it may not be clear to
what part of the message the person is responding;
3) Editing the quote to include only the relevant material forces the
responder to read and understand the the original message (or how the
original was interpreted.)"

I encourage you to practice deleting all of the previously posted material
except that part to which you are responding. I know this takes some extra
time and effort, but let's all do our best to help our listserv sponsors.

Thanks to you all. This is a great group of gardeners.

Sherryl Sandersfeld (list co-owner)
