John,
I have had geranium macrorrhizum in a couple of locations for some years
now. Both locations are in open shade and remain on the dry side most al of
the year. The geranium performs very well for me under these conditions.
Don't give it too heavy of shade if you want good bloom production and the
red - maroon colored foliage in the fall and early winter.
I would give it plenty of room if you are planting in good loose humus
rich soil. It can be quite vigorous in its spread. My experience is to give
it about four feet in diameter.
