Peter,
Are your ahpids in a greenhouse, under fluor. light, or just in general, a
problem outdoors?
Two years ago I purchased a bunch of tissue culture hostas to grow under
lights and as they began growing they were loaded with aphids. They spread to
all of my tender hosta seedlings, other seedlings I started, it was awful. I
tried all of the standard pesticides, malathion, kelthane, soapy water, etc.,
dragging the seedlings outdoors to spray them, then dragging them back in. I
washed off each seedling with the soapy water using my fingers to get all of
the buggers off off the crowns. I never did get rid of them, but a funny
thing happened. When I set them outside to harden them off in May, they
disappeared almost overnight. Some hungry aphid predators must have had a
field day.
I thought they would be easy to get rid of, boy was I wrong. I will be
curious to see if anyone has a remedy, particularly for indoors.
