Hi Mary,
Primula japonica should be an easy seed to germinate. I use a flat with
soaked and drained sterile medium. Fresh seed from current season is
surface sown not later than February following. A clear cover is placed on
the tray and it is then placed in a shaded cold frame to weather. The lid
is to maintain the moisture level not allowing the seed to dry out in any
way. They almost all germinate in early spring. I then pick out and place
in 3" pots. They are ready for gallon size by fall.
I am not sure of an answer for the yellow leaves as it could be so many
things. Lack of proper light or micronutrients including iron would be my
best guess.
