Re: [SHADEGARDENS] A Walk in the Garden

This is in S. IN as well...maybe it won't be long for us????

I finally found the time to take a walk in my garden after an absence of
three days and a schedule I hope not to repeat any time soon. My garden is
my place of peace and serenity and I go there to recharge my emotional and
physical batteries. Yesterday there were some lovely bonuses for me as I
walked the paths up the hill.
If the weather holds a bit longer and does not shift dramatically, this
will be the best year ever for Helleborus. H. niger is in full bloom with
its glistening white petals, and pink stained reverse. H. foetidus has been
gorgeous since middle December. Next to the Arum italicums it is really
making show. H. odorus is just coming into bloom and beginning to open the
scented green-gold bowls. H. purpurescens has plum backed green bells along
with newly emerging foliage. H. multifidius is right in step with it. The
old stand-by H. garden hybrids are showing off deep burgundy bells in
mature stands of over 8 years in three different location. Even the seeds
planted last summer are beginning to germinate in the open cold frames.
Primula veris is bursting through the crinkled new foliage in displays
of two toned soft yellow. Primula vulgaris is coming in right behind veris.
The two witchhazels have been in full bloom for over a month now. The
Chinese witchhazel in soft gold yellow came in first followed by the hybrid
Diane in red. The dwarf Cydonia Jet Trails is getting ready to burs into
snowy white blooms. Dwarf gold oriental spruce is brilliant with the
heather at is feet a deep plum with whitish-pink blooms. Usually I get only
the changing color of the foliage on the Heather since the cold dry winds
take the blossoms off.
My little patch of bulbous Iris are joining the Aconite. I see plenty
of bright green peeking through the brown leaf mulch all throughout the
garden.
The weather may be gray, gloomy and misting rain, but there there sure
is light and warmth in my soul now.
