Mary,
About growing the primulas from seed:
Is this the only variety you've tried?
What is your growing medium like?
I have been growing some primulas from seed collected in the Yunaan Seed
Exped. last year. I have p. forestii, p. polyneura, and some unnamed species.
Anyway, I found that they looked great for awhile, but eventually I would
overwater them, they grow so slowly and sort of reach a point when they look
like they are dying. What I did was to transplant them (they looked like they
would die anyway) into a very porous medium of perlite and Redi-Earth. I
watered them thoroughly and put them with my hosta seedlings under plastic
tenting. They took off and I believe it was the very porous medium that made
all the difference.
Another thing I noticed was that they suffered when I had them under my
double light fixture carts, where they were getting heat and high light
intensity. I found that they did much better at the end of a two tube
fixture, elevated at the very ends of the tubes (about 3" away). The ones I
did not transplant and had overwatered are now looking good as are the
transplanted ones.
Hope this helps.
