Catalog Shipping Charges

Jean Hecht's e-mail deeply touched me. I too detest paying outrageous
shipping charges. As i've pointed out on the hosta robin, on hosta orders
they are particularly unfair if calculated on a straight percentage. If
you order 3 $50 hostas, it won't cost the nursery a cent more to ship them
than 3 $5 hostas. Those that slap on a flat 15% shipping charge don't get
my business. In fact, I assume they don't want it.

Naylor Creek in WA charges a very sensible $5 or maybe it's $6 for the
first plant, and then 50 cents for each additional one. It's something
like that, anyway. Bridgewood Gardens has a modest shipping charge to
start with, BUT orders over $150 are shipped free! How's that for a little
incentive to increase your order? And Plant Delights charges $12 for
the first 8 plants as I recall, with additional ones shipped for 50 cents
each.

I do make an exception for Heronswood Nursery in WA and pay 40% shipping
because they sell plants you can't get anywhere else, at usually only
about $6 per. If the individual plant prices are low to start with, it's
not so out of line to pay 40 or 45% shipping. Not having seen the Roslyn
catalog, I can't comment on whether their prices are low enough to be
worth making an exception for.
