Re: [SG] trees

Thanks to Dan for his viewpoint. We have used various arborists on our
property and have generally been pleased with their concern for saving as
many trees as possible and their knowledge of the correct pruning methods.
We had to remove a huge dead rock elm but were concerned for the dogwoods
growing under it. Our arborist used ropes to tie back the dogwoods out of
harm's way and dropped the tree in small sections to avoid harming them.
It took all day, but it was worth it.

Generally, I think that if a "tree service" shows up uninvited at your
door, you should be EXTREMELY suspicious of their work. These characters
often travel from town to town, destroying trees and overcharging
customers. My mother (age 82) was almost a victim, but knew enough to
protect one of the largest of a very few Douglass Firs in the state of
Pennsylvania!

Dan, I seem to recall that there is an association of arborists that
provides some kind of certification of its members. Is this correct? If
so, what should we look for when we need tree work?
