Another introduction

Hi.

I've just joined the list and my garden is getting shadier every year!

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (Zone 9, Sunset Zone 15, inland not far
west of the Bay by a creek). Out house is surrounded by gardens, some of
which have plum trees scattered around and some of which are shadowed by the
wall of trees that shields us from our neighbors. And as the redwood tree
nextdoor gets bigger, we get even more shade.

Lately, I've been reading a lot about ferns, campanula, and fuchsia and I'm
going to try a few new species in the garden this year. If you have any
favorite fern species, I'd love to hear about them. I've also been
experimenting with grassy stuff that tolerates shade (mostly carex and
cyperus and plants that grow well at the base of trees in shade.

Since the redwood is bringing its shade to the cut flower garden, my other
quest is flowers good for cutting that grow well in shade. The shade's not
deep, but it's definitely shade --> part-shade. Astilbe, digitalis, Japanese
anemone hybrids, and tricyrtis have done well so far and I'm going to try
Astrantia and Heuchera for the first time this year. Any other suggestions
for cut flowers? Are there any that smell nice, too?

Have fun in the shade.
