Re: grasses
Hi, Hank,
Most ornamental grasses don't do very well in heavy shade. They survive but don't thrive and bloom well. Some will grow nicely in light shade. We grow Little Bluestem (Schizachrium scoparium), Calamagrostis
acutiflora Overdam, and Blue Fescue (Festuca ovina glauca) in an area that gets only 3-4 hours of afternoon sun but filtered light all day. These are hardy to our area, Zone 4b.
In warmer areas Carex does nicely in shade. It is marginal here, but will survive if protected or in a micro climate that approximates zone 5b or 6.
Good luck with the ornamental grasses; I think they are a great addition to a garden plan.
