This is a good letter from Marge, read it over carefully.
There is probably nothing more to be said here however I would call to
attention the thorough pasting Wayside Gardens has taken on this list. I was
the sole defender in that I think we have all learned and been inspired by
this catalog. White Flower Farm is regularly attacked and Michigan Bulb is a
metaphor for awful stuff. There are several others that have been discussed.
You can decide for yourself where you will shop but asking and giving
opinions on nurseries is no different than the frequent trading of info on
restaurants. Do you recall some truly dreadful accounts that you have read?
A small business, perhaps, deserves a little leniency but where you spend
your dollars, if they are limited, entitles you to ask questions.
Judging one dollar plants grown, potted and shipped to you should fall within
the purview of common sense.
I'd like to say one more thing here - about the mail order purchasing of
plants that are quite commonly in your local stores. Most of the best places
are supplying plants we cannot find locally and mostly that is what gardeners
are looking for with mail order. I think it absolutely wonderful to be able
to talk to nurserymen and seed sellers on these lists. That was not
available to the gardener before e-mail.
