I assume that most people would realize that one person's bad experiences
could be a fluke but ten people's probably aren't.
I agree with Claire's comment that most people buy from mail-order nurseries
what they can't get locally. I remember when Consumer Reports decided to
"test" mail-order firms by planting very ordinary plants (like 'Stella
D'Oro' daylily) from places like White Flower Farm and also from local
retailers like Frank's. As I remember it, after a year or so, there was no
size advantage to the mail-order plants, and Consumer Reports concluded that
the "better" mail-order places just weren't worth it. These people had the
souls of technicians, not of gardeners. Clearly they didn't understand what
the thrill of mail-order nurseries is all about. I actually stopped buying
the magazine after this because I decided I could never trust anything they
did again.
