Re: perennials to try--pinellia

Hello Cindy & Hank
Here is a cut and paste from my 2000 catalog on Pinellia. I can not remember if
the photos are up yet for these in my on line catalog. You may want to try as they
are photographed in bloom.
Pinellia pedatisecta      Z 5 - shade
$ 8.00
[ Jack in the pulpit relative ] Woodland soil that is well-drained and average.
Mature plants reach one to just under two feet in excellent soil. Erect green
spathe with extended green spandix. Foliage resembles our green dragon. Blooms all
summer. Clump forming plant originating from Japan. Perfectly hardy here, it has
survived -31 degrees in my garden. Keep well drained in winter.

Pinellia ternata      Z 5 - shade
$ 7.00
[ Jack in the pulpit relative ] Woodland soil. Forms open clumps reaching about
one foot in height. Like an impudent Jack in the pulpit with its tongue stuck out
at you as you go by. Smaller, more slender and delicate than the above. Spathe is
erect with green and dark green stripes. All summer bloomer. Perfectly hardy here.

Pinellia tripartita     Z 5 -  shade
$  8.00
[ Jack in the pulpit relative ] Woodland soil just as you would give a Jack in
the pulpit. Spathe green outside, brown on the inside, long spandix pushing up
through the green leaves. Forms clumps, blooming for months. Pinellias are in the
Arum family. Height is about fifteen inches.
There is another species P. cordata making it into the catalogs, and a cultivar
nemd P. tripartita atropurpurea (which I had for sale last year, but not available
this year.)
