Re: saurma henryi

Hank, I have not grown this, but a search of stashed info. came up
with a post from James Waddick about in on Alpine-L back in 1997.

He said that he's grown it for several years in Kansas City, zones
5/6 with great success. He said it emerges "dull grey-green and
very hairy and starts putting on its bright yellow three petalled
flowers as it barely emerges from the ground. By summer it is a foot
to 15 inches tall. It has just begun to self sow, but not
vigorously."

He further said "In addition to being an anagram for Asarum, Saruma
is quite a mix
of Asarum and Aristolochia characteristics. The foliage is very
similar to a few Chinese species like Asarum caudigerum or A.
caudigerellum. The flowers are quite Asarum like too with three part
flowers. The form of the plant resembles a short Aristolochia,
almost, but not quite a vine."

He finds it a handsome plant for light to medium shade and guesses it
might be hardy at least another zone colder than he is.

Hope this helps...sounds kinda neat. I see where seed is offered on
the NARGS list...may have to try for some.
