Re: needs list of plants for z 5 and deep shadewas:InterestedInShade Gardens

I am not Penny, but I love gooseneck loosestrife. I now have it in what I
call the Wild Garden, where I have all my beloved thugs--liriope,
lamiastrum, and this--it is dry shade, almost totally neglected, and they
keep each other somewhat in check. It would be best not to plant it with
anything you treasure. The first year it will behave but after that you
notice bits of it popping up several feet away from the original plant.

If it ends up in a place where it's endangering other plants, you CAN
eradicate it, but it will take a year or two to completely clear it out
(small bits of the root that are left in the ground will sprout, and you
can NEVER get it all out the first time). Eventually, however, it will be
gone. There are much worse pests, e.g., goutweed.
