Re: Corydalis

Thanks for the info Jim. The Beth Evans sounds like one I'd like. I visited another site which said the blue ones were hardy to 5 so I guess it may be a question of try it and see. I'll check out the other ones you mention. I did visit site you provided but there are only a couple of Canadian sources listed. Have seen some blue ones offered in Canadian catalogues which I have at home. This will not be a good gardening year for me because of other commitments so will wait until next year to order, unless of course I see some locally.

Lucky you with a greenhouse.

Penny,

Corydalis solida flowers can be anything from white to red, but most are
sort of pink-puce. You can get named strains or cultivars of C. solida
which have consistent color. One of the best is Corydalis solida 'Beth
Evans' which is a nice rose-pink.

The blues might be hardy for you, but it isn't so sure. I am getting ready
to do some trials of several blue-flowered Corydalis here this year.
Corydalis "ex Du Fu Temple" (cf. linstowiana) from Arrowhead Alpines is
supposed to be perennial and may be (!) hardy in zone 6. My first trial
with it outdoors was in a place where it failed to survive the winter; but
I carry seedlings over in the greenhouse. This one does seed around where
it is hardy!

I believe the blue varieties of Corydalis flexuosa are self-sterile
cultivars (clones) but I'll try growing three of them together this summer
and see if I get seed: Corydalis 'Blue Panda', 'China Blue' and 'Pere
David.' They cost US$8 to $13 from various places, like Heronswood.

You can get addresses and links to sources by looking on the Great Lakes
Bulb group's www page at:

Jim
