named ivy

I can't imagine being able to tell what variety of ivy (hosta, rose,
daylily, etc) I might be looking at without a tag. I have heard people
comment, "I have that hosta at home," when they are looking at a new variety
in a garden center. Some of these plants have so many varieties, and unless
you have a real discriminating eye, how can you tell which is which? I have
a cutting of a houseplant ivy that I am trying to root and grow indoors, and
I guess I will never know the name of it, although I really do like to know
what I've got outside. Sigh. Lynn
