Arnhild,
My non-gardening husband bought a plant of Atropurpurea as a gift for
me years ago, when Brunette was not available in North America. He
paid three times the price of a normal green plant. I could see no
trace of purple, but thought maybe the plant needed to settle in to a
new garden before it would show its colour. After two years, I wrote
to the nursery, and got a reply saying that most of the seedlings
would show purple. I was angry that she had charged so much for a
seedling, and not even a selected seedling. If you pay three times
the normal price, it should be for a division of a special form.
Eventually, after a few more years, the plant showed a purple tinge
for part of the year. The scent is lovely, and travels a long way on
the air. And now, thanks to tissue culture, I have a plant of
Brunette.
