Bobbi: In my fantasy garden, which I design when I am bored stiff on my
exercise bike, I have a lovely herb area that's the only formal element in
my otherwise naturalistic garden. It smells great and attracts lots of
butterflies, not to mention compliments. However, since I don't get more
than three hours of direct light anywhere, this shall remain a fantasy.
On the other hand, if you can read French (I can, but only a little) and
don't mind paying a big import tax, the French gardening magazine Jardins
Passion almost always has one really nice article on herb gardens. The
magazine gave me the idea, which I've been playing around with for my
fantasy garden, of planting a checkerboard of alternating golden- and
green-leaved herbs. Of course, I have to figure out how to merge that with
my crushing need to be surrounded by lavender.
By the way, I know exactly what you mean about The American Gardener--you
put it very well. And I, too, wonder if Allen Lacy ran out of steam.
Anyway, good luck with the herb garden. It sounds great. I'm jealous.
