Re: Improving the Soil--a BUNCH of questions!


Just a few comments from me.

I have hard clay. (Southern Georgia) The idea that the organisms will
disperse the organic matter into the clay is remote.  The problem with clay
is the there aren't many organisms living in clay soil to do the job you are
requesting them to do.

The issue of the benefit of adding organic matter extends beyond drainage.
Roots will not penetrate the hard clay.  Even in a soil that just needs
reworked roots will avoid the harder spots or stunt themselves.

If the original soil was clay before amending the necessity of reworking is
important.  Particles and layers of clay will surface in the organic matter
regardless of how far down you amend.  It must be a refreshing situation.

One last thing, though some plants will do fine in heavy clay or adverse
growing conditions, a gardeners main objective would be to create an
environment that would let a plant THRIVE.  Right?
