Taking just a smidgeon of all that good advice, I would add one more
paragraph also learned by years and years of gardening.

If you have a border or whatever you call it in one location for many years
you will be replacing or dividing plants regularly.  If you make it a
practice to renovate the plant site when you divide or replace eventually the
entire border will be in good shape.  This eliminates the need to work over
an entire border from time to time (AWFUL JOB).  I have noticed that some of
my gardens are in very fine condition from following this practice, better
than the original garden.  We have begun with thin soil over rocks, rock
everywhere.
