Hello Walter & others,
I wrote Cousin Allen about H. "Molly Bush", as I remembered it coming form
him. Below is his reply to me...
Cousin Gene,
I got seeds of 'Palace Purple' back in the early eighties friend, Tony
Hall, who was/is spervisor of the Alpine House. Brian Halliwell, then the
curator(kew)erbaceous and alpine plants, probably got it from Alan Bloom, who
probaly got it from e either the NEw York Botanic Gardens or Brooklyn Bot
Gdn. They may have gotten it from Dr Edgar Wherry though the trail has gone
cold by then... Who knows???
Subsequently, I introduced/reintroduced 'Palace Purple'(the name anyway)
to commercial horticulture here in the US around 1985. I was very vigilant
about seed stock, trying to selct the best dark ones from production. One
stood out that I used in the breeding. Klaus Jelitto, and some Dutch
nurserymen came calling at Holbrook Farm(NC) in '89 or therebaouts and like
this one plant. I gave a piece. They took it back to Europe and subsequenty
produced - in no time (tc) - a gazillion of them and needed a name. I named
it after my daughter, Molly who's now a college freshman in NYC.
Availability? Sunny Border (whlse) has it in CT. Wayside listed in 2000.
Best,
Cousin Allen
