But would the ferns and primula take the flooding?

In all the shots taken looking southwest, that area is literally covered with
Phlox divaricata in the early spring.  I also have quite a few Podophyllum
peltatum or Mayapples, which I love.  Other wild flowers I've identified are
Tradescantia ohiensis, Commelina erecta, Sisyrinchium campestre, Ornithogalum
umbellatum, Anthemis cotula and something that looks similar to foam flower.
All of these were pre-existing on the property.

This year I am concentrating on the section (west side) that you didn't see.
;)  There is a drainage area there in shade which can have standing water when
wet - but when it's dry, its dry. :)
