This is a very nondescript shrub. I just went out to look at it so I
could tell you about it, but even though I knew where it was, and
knew it was in bloom, I had to walk right up to it before I could see
it. It has a few leaves still on, white very sweetly-scented flowers,
with lots of buds still to come. A lot of winter-flowering shrubs do
that, so that if one flush of flowers gets frosted, a second or third
lot might survive to set seeds.
It's best for picking. I have a shelf at eye level behind my sink,
and that is where I keep a little bouquet to admire and smell while
I'm washing dishes.
If you want something to enjoy from across the garden at this time,
plant Hamamelis mollis. The bright yellow flowers are noticeable
from a distance, and the scent travels a long way, too.
