Lurker here, chiming in.  In my Zone 9 garden, the idea of pushing the
limits is a bit different, but how I do it is to group things that are
frost tender (like my dwarf citrus trees) and protect them with a heat
cable or Christmas lights and some Reemay or other row cover. A Vermont
person might want to go with the large type of Christmas lights and old
quilts. Things like the cyclamen, I sink into the ground in their pots and
then take them in when it's too cold (or hot, in my case).
