Robins, please help me welcome Joann Stewart to our group. Joann lives in
Georgia! Welcome to the robin, Joann!
Sherryl
Sherryl,
I hope I'm not out of my depth here, as I slid into shade gardening by
default...5 1/2 acres, and less than 1/2 acre near the house gets sun, so I
had to adapt, quick! Upon my remarriage fifteen years ago I gave up
university teaching and settled into my first experience of being a
"housewife". We had six children between us and 7 dogs and 4 cats, plus
groupies and hangers-on, so it was never boring. Now I run a 7-day a week
antique store in a nearby town, which is demanding, but fun, and feel
grateful for matched socks and the occasional day off.
In my spare time, I grow hosta, some ferns, astilbe, aispidistra, some
primroses (the cowslip kind), daphne,LOTS of hellebores, etc...the usual.
I have specimen plants of many others, but they are still in the trial
stage, as I don't know for certain how well they will perform for me. In
the "sunshiny" part of the garden I have crammed in (literally) l500
varieties of daylilies.
My background is in geography, not botany or anything which would really
help me at this phase of my life. I grew up in Georgia, moved to Britain
in my 20s and stayed until almost 40. Came back and had to learn to garden
all over again. Also how to cope with hungry deer and rabbits, plus
too-enthusiastic neighborhood dogs. (They think I can walk on water.) My
only pet at the moment is a huge attack cat, who hates the dogs and thinks
he has to protect me. Leads to some interesting foliage rearrangement.
I write a weekly gardening column, which has led to much more research
than I would have thought I'd do now that I'm "retired". I learn something
new everyday, whether from customers, friends or fellow gardeners. What
fun it is to share!! I look forward to being part of the shade gardening
robin.
