I had Kirengeshoma for several years and lost it in our drought two summers
ago. Are you sure this is OK for dry shade? If so, then maybe it was
something else that did mine in. I was under the impression it needed the
same conditions as hosta and astilbe???

It is in a very dry part of my garden, where hostas also do well. I don't have
any asilbes growing in dry shade. Gee, if they are not watered practically
every other day here they wilt terribly.(In fact, I treat most of my astilbes
as annuals.I find them very hard to grow.)
My thesis is that hostas will grow in dry shade IF they do not get direct
sunlight in the middle of the day during mid-summer.
As to the kirengeshoma that I grow--I did dig a veritable crater to plant it
in--filled with Pro-Mix, manure, vermiculite, green sand, organic peat.
Perhaps that is why it is growing well. Also, perhaps that it gets only a
small dose of morning sun helps. It lives BUT if it were in more light I am
sure the flowers would do better. Then I would have to water it more often, I
suppose.
