Sherryl and Claire--I am glad I am not alone.
Claire, I forgot about A.pumila --yes, it DOES come back year after year.

Group,
A. pumila chinensis actually tried not to die in the drought last summer.
Sometimes it would wilt a bit and some leaves got brown edges. I probably
watered it two or three times because I like the large mass it has produced in
a shrubbery. Two and one half months with no rainfall that could be measured
is a real test for dry shade.
The other astilbes are much more difficult.
A question - there was A. chinensis (not pumila) in the Walmart last fall.
There were pots and pots of it. We thought it was mislabelled. I should have
picked up some but was not in a plant buying mood after all that dry weather.
Is there a tall A. chinensis and if so would it be a better dry shade plant
than the ones mentioned here in the last two days. That Walmart plant was at
least 20 inches tall.
