Cindy,
You are BRAVE to try Jap. Maples in Zone 4. I feel hesitatant trying to grow
them in Zone 5. If you are going to experiment, I'll tell you a couple that
have worked for me. A. Bloodgood is one that is reliably hardy in our area,
not necessarily protected. You see it growing out in areas that get a lot of
wind and sun, as well as low light areas with protection. Another is a
cutleaf Acer 'Garnet' which is very reliable around here (has survived -26
degrees with no damage) without protection. I have had it for about 7 or 8
years. My suggestion to you would be to write for a Forest Farm Catalogue,
Ray and Peg Prag, 990 Thetherow Rd., Williams, OR 97544-9599. It is $4.00.
Buy some small ones at a cheap price ($13-$14) and try them. The first couple
years I make tents around them and wrap with burlap. In my neck of the
prairie, it's the wind that gets them, not the temp. If you buy some small
cheap ones and they don't live, you won't feel as bad as losing a big
expensive one. Once they get established, they might make it.
