[SHADEGARDENS] An intro
Hello, everyone...
Just wanted to do a short introduction of myself and all that, so here
goes....
I'm down here in San Antonio, Texas, where I'm retired from civil
service at the ripe old age of 40+ but not quite 50! (grin) While I am
retired, I'm employed as the manager of a mini-storage facility - what I
consider to be just this side of a perfect job for a retiree. I live
on-site just upstairs from my office, and now have more than ample time
to tend to my ever-increasing plant collection. I'm a so-called Master
Gardener for the county, and am also a member of the local Garden Club.
While I do have a great job that allows ample time for fooling around in
dirt, alas the only soil I have is in pots - if you've ever been around
a mini-storage complex, you'll know that's it's all asphalt driveways
and cement/stucco walls. And there's a great amount of shade in various
spots throughout the day as the sun rises and sets. Now I have to learn
container gardening, although I am now in the process of putting
togather a 2' x 32' raised bed garden along the one fence line.
One thing I have discovered in the short three months I've been here is
that nearly everyone loves plants - and my plants have been the source
of a great many good conversations with customers as they come and go.
Those four lemons on my Meyer lemon trees (They were my first ones ever
on them) were a good example - when I plucked one and brought it into
the house, two people stopped in to see if I knew a lemon was missing!
I'm looking forward to participating in this list and learning as I go.
I can always use advice on what plants do best in containers, and of
course will need some suggestions on container plants that will do well
in the hot Texas summer with all the shade I'll have.
So, that's me...and my situation - thanks for listening!
Larry
