In regards to growing daylilies in the shade. All red and purple daylily cultivars prefer afternoon shade. Color pigment of red and purple daylilies have the tendency to fade in the sun. One of the prettiest spots in my garden during July is a section of the border that is planted with red CHICAGO RUBY daylilies and white CASA BLANCA true lilies. A few names and color of daylilies that grow well in the shade for me are. CHICAGO CAMEO-pink CHICAGO CANDY CANE-pink ODE TO SPRING-yellow FIRESTORM -red exotic form STRUTTERS BALL purple AFRICAN GRAPE-burgundy with chalky eye DARK STAR- purple spider FIREPOWER- reddish orange HUDINI-purple MUMZAZ-golden yellow NOTORIOUS -orange red deep red eye ON FIRE-bright red QUEEN OF ROSES-rose PRUSSIA -orange red ROCKET CITY-orange TRAHYLATA-dark lavender with purple eye SCARLET KIRTEL- red Foliage of daylilies grown in the shade do not get as 'ratty ' looking after peak bloom. Daylilies would be the perfect perennial if foliage would remain green throughout the summer. I usually cut back daylily foliage to 6 inches in August to maintain garden appearance.
