To Cindy Johnson from Bill Nash..
sent our via [SHADEGARDENS][HUGE][HONZA] lists
At 05:41 AM 1/18/98 EST, Cindy Johnson wrote to Bill Nash:
"Thank you very much.. I can't wait to see what I get out of the seed.
This will be my second year of planting seed. Do you have that problem too?"
~~~>> Cindy, I've been with seedlings all my life, since birth 1941 (my pod
& pollen parents were farmers feeding our crew?). I've been growing
seedlings under lights, since 1968 and one would think: that after a
lifetime, of being into everything from soup to nuts it would get terribly
& awefully boring? Well it is...but
When I obtain some special seed having excellent hosta progeny
potential (from something I've never grown before?) excitement & impatience
to see mature result is there yes, even in old timers like me? One of my
biggest thrills is to see the excitement manifesting in new wannabe
seedling growers, since this seems to generate excitement in us elderly
folk too. Seeing the "flame of enthusiasm" manifest in a new generation of
seedling/hybridizing enthusiasts is exciting meditation for an old fart
like me. The natural cause & effect reaction of a seed sprouting forth a
new life form from seed, resulting in greater enthusiasm within the grower
is nice to see. Many times, a first time seedling grower, plants a seed
and a new variety appears. Beginner'd luck & coincidence.. Maybe..but I'm
more inclined to believe, this was predestined to happen; by Universal
forces beyond our control & imagination; and which, put that person to sow
that seed...and it happened! The flower kingdom & our Universe is
expanding as it should, beyond our control.
I really like hearing how some of the others have trouble throwing out
seedlings. (and ya, I was wondering what happened with HUGE.)
I started HUGE: seed sharing with anyone who wanted to grow it,
since much of my seed came my way as a gift e.g. #76 'Let's Streak' seed,
was sent to me in 1994 as a gift. An F1 generation seed from hand
pollination of Crepe Suzette streaky form. This hybridizer did not grow
open-pollinated seed, only hand-crossed, hence she sent me the seed from
her F1 streaky seedlings, as "building blocks" so to speak and asked for
anonymity, hence I cannot mention her name. I obtained 250 streaky
seedlings from that sowing, have been sharing seed from these seedlings
ever since, and now, you we are moving into the F4 generation.
HUGE was co-ordinated by myself, but without the support and
participation of many others, this free hosta seed distribution would not
have happened. Let's just say everyone in this now defunct group has
helped in some way, even if it was simply being a member.
Late in 1997, ideas started coming forward to bring "trading" into
the agenda & focus & forefront, hence I converted the seedling
growing/hybridizing agenda over to a "hybrids unlimited group exchange"
with "trade" brought to the forefromt, and teaching new wannabe
hybridizers, being put on the back burner (so to speak).
During this whole process, I could not forget something said by
someone who has pioneered the hosta species, and someone I admire very
dearly for doing so, even though I've never met him. Paul Aden suggested
last June, there may be a need for a shade gardening group encompassing all
shade tolerant species and I never forgot that. Some of us have been
discussing Paul Aden's suggestion privately ever since he mentioned it; and
finally, in an effort to bring Paul into the <huge forum> I promised I
would convert to an "new internet shade-species exchange" <nise> if he
joined us...he did.
It seems, those unknown universal forces, which make things happen
totally opposite to what one plans and wishes to happen did take control.
In this case, our cyber-space connection <list-server> would not have it
our way and senders emails were returned, without serving the list. At
this time, Diana Pederson, our <huge> list-server co-ordinator, suggested
we move into a "primroses" list-server, for the "shadegardens" perspectives
& purposes; and Sherryl Sandersfeld volunteered to run it.
To make a long story short, most of our [HUGE membership] if not
all of it.. is now in the [SHADEGARDENS list server] and membership
therein, has jumped to 190 members in a couple of weeks.. no emails are
coming in addressed to HUGE, so all I can say is huge has self-destructed.
Cindy?.. you and some others have asked what happened to HUGE.. thanks...
that's what happened.
The huge group membership has moved into higher motivations &
aspirations with the birth of the [SHADEGARDENS] list-server and I
cordially invite & encourage everyone & anyone who is not a member therin
to sign in?
To do this, all one needs to do is send an email to the internet
address below:
shadegardens@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
and in the message part of the email, simply type:
subscribe shadegardens [Firstname Lastname]
We have moved into a far far greater promised arena [SHADEGARDENS]
with far far greater tasks & challenge before everyone. According to
shadegardens philosopy, hosta is only one of many shade tolerant species.
Paul Aden suggested concentration on Hosta Companion Plantings, in his book
and on internet, and some of us have taken his torch and gone in that
direction.
Saying BYE is always sorrowful.. moving, leaving, closing down one
assemby or another, but as of this post [HUGE] is deleted.
Perhaps [SHADEGARDENS} is a new beginning and launching point for
greater objectives to be, hope to see you there and remain
hosta sincerely yours
ps.. this is also being sent out privately to the 200+ honza membership
before it shut down and re-started.
