Dear fellow shade gardeners,
Boy, am I impressed. Signed up this morning, got a welcoming note to
file an e-mail to introduce myself and, suddenly, without warning, got a
file full of correspondence, including one from a gardening hero of
mine.
So, the awe and the yikes over, I am John Dash. I'm gardening on eight
acres: for those of you who may know it, Doc Charles Whitney's arboretum
in Fairport, NY. Doc died five years ago and we bought it about four
years ago. Lots of wonderful shade, much of it high-limbed and perfect
for my favorite plants, hostas and daylilies. We have enough sun for
nice roses and lilium, too. We tell people we're re-landscaping, inch by
inch.
I liked that stuff today about discouraging the deer. We'll be
planting alliums this season throughout the gardens to see what that
does. We stock up on smelly shampoos, Camay soap and the like. I suspect
that the real solution to the problem will be to get philosophical about
it and let the deer feast away. Well, we'll see.
I enjoy being in your company, and look forward to talking with you.
