Hi Alex,
Are you talking about Vinca minor? I have read where one can still find large
patches of vinca/myrtle in the woods of old, abandoned homesteads out east.
But since it's such a low growing plant, can it really crowd out other plants
or can it be used as a low ground cover under medium to large hostas? Same
question for Ajuga reptans. I thought gold hostas growing up thru
bronze/burgandy colored ajuga might look nice in a small area (I do prefer
more subtle color combinations but it would add a little spice).
I did plant 3 kinds of the Ajuga 2 years ago around stepping stones since it
can take some foot traffic. The A. 'Bronze Beauty' is vigorous and I'll
watch it, but A. 'Burgandy Glow' increased only sloooowly and A. 'Silver
Beauty' almost died out over the winter in spite of deep snow cover.
What have others experienced with these plants?
Thanks,
Cindy Johnson

p.s. My grandma's old patch of Ajuga died out in one of her gardens but it is
doing quite nicely in her adjacent lawn (can't really call it grass as there
are more weeds than grass - just the way she likes it!)
