I have grown nicotiana alata for years and
would never be without it. Easy to start from
seed inside or out. The fragrance is only
detectable at night, to my nose, and carries into
the house. I plant "patches" around the doors,
deck, wherever I "hang out." I live in about 6b
zone and it does reseed every year. The only
problem with reseeders is if you have other
colors of nicotiana in your yard, they cross
pollinate and you end up with seedlings of all
kinds of colors. The way I handle this to plant
a package of the alata every year, and check out
the seedlings as they come along, culling out
the ones I don't care for. The colored ones
really don't have fragrance -- but some of the
colors!: lavender with a picotee darker edge,
deep, velvety purple! They will have the height
of the alata (3'), but the colors of the shorties. I
have often thought if I had enough time I'd sure
like to experiment with saving some of those
gorgeous colors. Anyway, I enjoy what I get
every year, but make sure I get the fragrance
with a new package. It's worth the $2.00 to me.
I found nicotiana sylvestris to smell wretched.
Cool looking plant but P-U!
