I would add to this that the word "need" does not necessarily imply desire
or any other emotion or state of mind on the part of the plant. There was
some confusion on the Hosta Robin about this. Here's a definition from
Webster's: need (n) - 2a: a physiological...requirement for the
well-being of an organism (Note that it's not talking about happiness, but
physical well-being). need (v) - 1a: to be..necessary. Elvis probably
misused the word, as he was so focused on "want" it felt like a
"necessity." The most stringent anti-anthropomorphists (?) among us can
feel confident using "need" to describe the "needs" of our plants.

One of my catalogues (Endangered Species) gives light requirements in
foot-candles. May I assume there is a reason they seem to think that means
anything to their customers? That is, could there be a simple and
relatively inexpensive method for taking such a measurement, so one would
know which plant would thrive in office or foyer? If no one knows
off-hand, I'll go look it up.
