Re: [SHADEGARDENS] A Variety of Topics

Sheila, congrats so far, #1 philostachys nigra is not a shadeplant, it is
tolerant of light shade, but will do best when frying. Mine in deep shade
does not multiply. It sits.
Is your culm colored or still green??
Moso is really pushing it, but hey, give it a try.
I was in central Ga. for the National Fair doing boo craft demos, and the
boys down there are getting 6" basal diameters and 50'+ on lengths. Keep me
up on it
You can interplant, and then remove those culms that r bothersome.
Refer to Japanese Touch book, page 18 and 19 for reference pix.
If nigra defoliates, it should re-foliate within 4-6 weeks.
My giant timber does periodically, then re sprouts.
They make their own mulch in this way, which is very high in silica.
