There is a long list of fragrant hostas.
A preliminary form of the list is in Schmid's
THE GENUS HOSTA. Interested persons
may post to me privately for a computer file
of fragrant hosta names.
Some cultivars are more or less fragrant.
The known source for fragrance in hostas
is the species hosta plantaginea, known under
such names as the AugustLily, Grandiflora
and with double forms such as Aphrodite,
Venus, and White Fairy which are fussy
regarding siting for successful bloom.
There are some fragrant hostas not known
to be plantaginea sports or hybrids...genetic
evaluation may reveal a relationship.
