Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Unfinished Compost

Cindy,

I used to make my own potting/seedling mix using my own "black
gold"....until I discovered that using any non-sterile mixture invites
fungus growth and extraordinary loss of seedlings.

The first stages of seedling growth seem to be critical. They are quite
delicate early on, and I believe it's best to allow them to gain some
development before stressing them with such heavy, rich additives....at
least I've found this to be true in an artificial (greenhouse) setting.

I'm not sure what your growing conditions are...indoor or out, and, if it's
indoor, air circulation is an important consideration, as well. I think we
have fewer problems of this sort outdoors due to the natural air-flow
surrounding these plants, and so keeping a fan running continuously inside
the greenhouse helps prevent many problems before they begin.

I now reserve my compost applications to outdoor gardens of more mature
plants which seem to benefit more, or are stressed less.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
