Re: [SG] Meconopsis

I have grown Meconopsis betonicifolia in Zone 6 (Eastern Canada)- but it
grows well in Quebec so you should be able to grow it there. (In fact, it
was even featured on a Canadian stamp last year or the year before).

I grew mine from seed from the BC Botanical Garden (Van Deusen Gardens).
It was fresh seed and germinated easily in Jan. - Feb. in sterilized
ProMix without extra bottom heat. (I noted yesterday in the December, 98
"Floraculture International" a comment that germination is increased
by applications of Gibherellic (sp?) Acid. )

Took about 3 years to reach blooming size.

The bad news is, it is "monocarpic" which seems to mean "blooms once and
dies". The good news is, it seemed (for us) to produce several subordinate
plants around itself- and only the main one bloomed and died. It has
survived here now for three years.

We grow it in a small rhododendron bed, which only gets sun for an hour or
so at noon.
