This is for all those interested in information on plants from THE PRIMROSE
PATH. Martha Oliver taught an elderhostel workshop on perennial gardening and
we spent hours in the Oliver garden - I was so impressed with the primula
which are Charles' special pride, but don't have the boggy or damp area they
seem to require. Lucky those of you who do!
They have many small gems for the shady garden and I have enjoyed ordering
plants with which I am not familiar and then waiting the requisite year or two
to see what I have grown. Among the "not so little" plants, I really have
enjoyed the wood poppy - stylophorum diphyllum - which is an early exuberant
bloomer for a long period and bears little fat pillows of hairy seed pods
which would be the second best reason to grow the wood poppy!
For another excellent show of glowing yellow in shady spots, Kirengeshoma is
a lusty late-bloomer - about 30-36 inches tall with attractive light green
foliage and an abundance of slightly pendulant golden bells. This one
spreads, but not alarmingly so - just enough to allow you another clump every
few years!
You may view the Oliver's catalog on the web at www.theprimrosepath.com. If
you've misplaced their address, it's there.
