Hello all, I am new to the group however I know Gene from another list I am
on. My property consists of 3 big maple trees, one in front and 2 in back.
The one in front isn't to bad as far as the shabe is concerned. I do have the
usual yew hedge in the front of my bay window which is fine with me, since I
have not been gardening for all that long. So thats what I had to start with
no flowers at all. My other house had hosta and sedum so it didn't have a lot
of flowers either but atleast it had something. Anyway on the one side of my
house I tried to start a wildflower patch. I have had to put in different
mixes for about 3 yrs now because the original planting did not come back for
me. Something I did wrong I'm sure. However this spring I need to do a maor
over haul in this area because my last mix had the dreaded common yarrow in
it. Now mind you I like yarrow but it took over and hardly bloomed to boot. I
belong to a garden club and we have a plant sale every spring and I have an
Aunt that will take some I think. This area is in full sun by the way.
Now we go to the other side and this part starts in sun and goes to shade do
to my tree plus the neighbor has one not to far from mine. Not sure what their
tree is. Not very good at idenifying them. I just now it has awful big leaver
that blow into my yard that I have to rake. So on the shady side I have hosta
(not sure what kind trying to figure out all of the common names before
rememberig the variety) astillbe, trillium, bleeding heart the kind that goes
dormant but I want the fringed kind that stays all summer, bluebells, sweet
woodruff, phlox. and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting. What I found out
last year is this area is dry shade due to the over hang of my roof. So I need
to do some research on this because I really got tired of watering and I now
some of those things need to be moved. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sorry this is so long. Well I hope I can cotribute and intend to learn a lot
from everyone.
