I try to grow ferns in Ill, too! The evergreen ferns are somewhat touchy
about our weather. I have a holly fern, rated zone 6 that I've grown for
years. It's evergreen, but the foliage looks pretty yucky by Jan. and by
spring, I cut most fronds off. I think most of the evergreen ferns are
marginally hardy here, and I make a burlap tent around them and fill it with
some leaves. They stay evergreen, but since I can't see the plant...τΏτ
Most of the ferns that are hardy here will die back to the ground. Hope this
helps. If you want specific names, I'll have to dig that info up to be
accurate. Just say the word. Where are you located in ILL?
