I have never heard of an orange flowered clematis. Ours grow sort of wild in
the shrubs and over the ground.
An interesting aside to clematis and the lore of culture surrounding it is the
disappearance of plants from time to time. I have had plants fail to come up
one year and reappear the next. One slept for two years. A British guide
that I hev recommends putting a two inch PVC black pipe in the planting hole
and using this to keep the plant supplied with water. I can't say that I have
done this however the disappearance seems to be in the drought years.
Nelly Moser is the one always mentioned for shade. My niece at the nursery
has one (in zone 5) sandy soil growing up a telephone pole in the trees. It
is twenty feet high and blooms freely each year. They water on a regular
schedule and that may be a factor.
