Hi Sheila,
I can only tell you about the 2 clumps I have and where they grow for me. I
got a clump from my Grandma's maybe 6 or 7 years ago and planted it in my
woodland garden, with lots of leaf mulch and in dappled shade from a Silver
Maple and a huge Red Oak. It just keeps coming back every year, although I
can't say that it's increasing in size very fast. Then 3 years ago, I got
another plant from a friend and put it in my "acid" garden where I try to
lower the pH from our normally neutral soil with a pine needle mulch. This
garden gets sun for a couple hours in the afternoon, a little too much because
the Clintonia borealis (Bluebead Lily) that grows with it gets burnt spots.
Both gardens are in sandy soil that dries out fairly fast, but I still only
water when it has been dry for a couple weeks.
My question: under ideal conditions (whatever that might be), do Maidenhair
Fern clumps increase in size very fast?? and do they also increase by starting
new plants near the original plant?? I keep waiting for this to happen since
I love this fern.
Thanks,
Cindy Johnson
