trailing in pots

I found some wonderful pots on drastic sale at the local Target, the
kind that look like terra cotta but are very lightweight and can take
Illinois winters without breaking ... and there's a terrific area in the
shade (fairly deep) of a Japanese Tree Lilac near my breezeway where it'd be
lovely to have some color and foliage.
So, even though it's rather late, especially this summer, to be
putting in or buying annuals, I got some nice annuals on sale for these new
pots. It's kind of a neat combination: for each of the four big pots, one
double impatiens and then a huge single new guinea in the same hue (so two
plants in each pot colored, respectively, orange, rose, salmon, and white
with pink).
But to complete my idea, I now need a trailing plant that is
shade-loving. Could be annual or perennial. Suggestions?
Also, any suggestions for small perennials I might put in next
spring? Maybe someone knows of a tiny miniature hosta, heucherella,
etc.????
